Mirwaiz Muhammad Yousuf Shah (1892–1968) was a religious and political leader in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir during the British Raj. He served as the Imam (head priest) of the Jama Masjid in Srinagar, a position that is also known as the "mirwaiz of Kashmir" (head of Islam in Kashmir). He was a leading figure in the Kashmir independence movement and opposed the rule of the Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh.
Mirwaiz  moulvi yousuf  Shah was born in Rajouri kadal Srinagar, Kashmir, in 1892. He received his early education at the local madrassa. In 1925, he went to Darul Uloom Deoband in India, where he studied under  Moluna Anwar Shah Kashmiri ( R.A) After completing his studies at Deoband, he returned to Kashmir and became the imam of the Jama Masjid.
In the early 1930s, Shah joined the Muslim Conference, a political party that was formed to represent the interests of the Muslim community in Kashmir. In 1931, he succeeded Attiqullah as the mirwaiz of Kashmir. As mirwaiz, he became a leading figure in the Kashmir independence movement. He opposed the rule of the Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh, and called for the establishment of an independent Islamic state in Kashmir.
In 1947, when India and Pakistan gained independence from British rule, Kashmir became a disputed territory. The Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh, acceded to India, but a large number of Kashmiri Muslims wanted to join Pakistan. This led to the First Kashmir War, in which Pakistan and India fought over control of Kashmir.
Mirwaiz moulvi yousuf Shah sided with Pakistan during the First Kashmir War. He fled to Azad Kashmir, a Pakistani-controlled region of Kashmir, where he continued to lead the Kashmir independence movement. In 1951, he was elected president of Pak Kashmir. He served as president until his death in 1968.
Mirwaiz moulvi yousuf Shah is considered to be one of the most important figures in the Kashmir independence movement. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the Kashmiri people and he played a key role in the struggle for Kashmir's independence. He is remembered as a martyr for the cause of Kashmir's independence.
